Catalog description

This course explores the theory and practice of teaching English/Language Arts in grades 7-12. The course explores sociocultural views of language and learning as they apply to course readings and discussion. English education students will engage in ways of teaching adolescents the skills of writing (creative to expository), reading, responding to literature, listening, speaking, and exploring new media while considering student and community contexts. Students will write lesson and unit plans, explore classroom management styles, assessment techniques, and ways of differentiating instruction as they create and participate in a community of teachers. The focus of the class will always be to facilitate the group into more insightful, more creative and more compassionate teachers upon entry into the secondary English language arts classroom.
