Duquesne University · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
This seminar explores communication media as environments that shape human perception, culture, and consciousness. Drawing from foundational works (including but not limited to McLuhan, Innis, and Grant) alongside contemporary thinkers in media ecology (Strate, Kroker, Angus, Heyer, and others) the seminar examines how communication media and technology are understood as extensions of human faculties and as systems that structure experience. The course emphasizes medium theory, media archeology, symbolic environments, as well as the evolution of human communication technology in the digital age.
