COMM 221
Listening Communicative Responsiveness
Duquesne University · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
Students will cultivate an understanding of listening that goes beyond merely an auditory process, asking what it means to listen to others, to the world, and to ourselves. Through readings, reflective exercises, and class discussions we will learn how attentive listening can give voice to the voiceless, foster empathy, and reshape our sense of identity in an ever-changing world. Drawing from philosophy, cultural studies, rhetorical theory, and literature, the course approaches listening not merely as a communicative act, but as an ethical, relational, and transformative mode of being.
