This course examines the historical, material, and literary evidence about the Trojan War, fought between a cohort of Greeks against the Trojans sometime between the 9th and 6th centuries BC. We will be examining material finds at Troy as well as literary accounts from Homer, Euripides, Vergil, and scholars who have investigated this topic. The course will focus on how the Trojan War has been interpreted and ?used? in ancient and modern contexts. What did the Trojan War mean and how has that meaning been articulated in ancient and modern sources? This course also focuses on how the Trojan War was incorporated into notions of a Greek heroic journey and how women played a role in this war.
