Green Chemistry

Catalog description

An overview of the principles of Green Chemistry, viewed through both theoretical and practical lenses. The class is particularly focused on the themes of minimizing waste and hazard associated with chemical industry, maximizing sustainability of chemical technologies, and designing substances and processes to have low environmental and societal costs. Concepts covered include: atom economy and other efficiency metrics, catalysts, renewable resources and recyclable products, life cycle analysis, risk analysis, and basics of toxicology. Students taking this course should have at minimum successfully completed Organic Chemistry I and II.
