Catalog description

Research in Progress seminar (CHEM 588): All graduate students in the Dept. of Chemistry and Biochemistry will be required to attend and participate in this pass/fail course. Class will meet every other week and in each class two students in years 2-5 will give short (22 minute + 8 min discussion) presentations on their research, with students selected on a rotating basis with a focus on those students further along in the program. The goals of this course are threefold: our students will be better informed on the breadth of research being conducted in our department, allowing them to seek counseling and advice from their colleagues when needed; students will be given additional opportunity to hone their presentation skills; and we will be building a greater sense of community, allowing newer students to gain understanding of faculty expectations with respect to what constitutes effective research. Faculty are encouraged to attend and help students in their presentation as well as to generate discussion.
