Course Description: To understand how biological macromolecules work and to design or engineer new macromolecules, it is important to understand ways in which we can alter structure and function to produce new proteins. This course examines protein composition and structure, various genetic, biochemical and chemical techniques required to engineer proteins for basic and translational biotherapeutic research and development. Focus is placed on the application of protein engineering in the study of disease relevant proteins and signaling cascades. Students will also utilize computational and experimental data to develop practical strategies to identify novel protein variants with improved properties. Finally, students will be provided with advanced knowledge of protein engineering approaches that will enable students to find solutions on their own scientific problems. Students taking this course should have at minimum successfully completed one semester of Biochemistry.
