Biomedical Applications in Biochemistry

Catalog description
This course provides a molecular discussion of the relationships between the metabolism of biomolecules, their roles in human biochemistry, and the role of these processes in human health and disease. We will discuss the dynamic maintenance of biochemical homeostasis and health, especially in terms of cellular energy demands, redox balance, and mechanisms for detection and metabolism of foreign substances. In addition to human-based biochemical mechanisms, the course also includes a discussion of our emerging understanding of the role of the microbiome in determining human health. Specific topics may vary by semester based upon the interests of the instructor and the students. Many of the course topics will be approached through student-led class discussions and presentations. Pre- or co-requisite: CHEM 436 or permission of instructor
