Catalog description

Organic Total Synthesis is a graduate level course which is a successor to the standard Organic Chemistry courses you will have previously taken. The main goals of this class will be to: firstly improve your understanding of the logic behind the synthesis of complex targets. Secondly gain an appreciation for the changes structural complexity can have on organic reaction mechanisms and outcomes. Finally, your knowledge of organic reactions and mechanism will improve through the vector of study of synthetic chemistry. An important addendum is that this class is entirely based on a working knowledge of organic chemistry; I will review basic topics as they arise, however due to the nature of the course you are responsible for having/developing a basic understanding of: electronic structure, bonding, hybridization, resonance, aromaticity, acidity, stereochemistry, electrophilic/nucleophilic substitution, elimination, properties and names of typical functional groups and a basic concept of spectroscopy. Students taking this course should have at minimum successfully completed Organic Chemistry I and II.
