Catalog description

Chemistry 506 is the first part of a two-semester sequence for graduate students. This class provides an understanding of atomic and molecular structure and energy. Course content builds upon basic ideas and concepts in chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Material covered involves the Schrödinger equation, particle in a box, postulates of quantum mechanics, the harmonic oscillator and rigid rotor, the hydrogen atom, approximation methods, and molecular spectroscopy. The class objective is to establish a solid foundation in quantum chemistry to be applied and understood in thermodynamics, kinetics, chemical bonding and molecular spectroscopy. Students enrolled in this course will have additional requirements to fulfill when compared to students enrolled in CHEM 328. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.
