Catalog description

Advanced Organic Chemistry is a graduate level course which is a successor to the standard Organic Chemistry courses you will have previously taken. The main goals of this class will be three fold: the first will be to gain a deeper understanding of reactions and mechanism already familiar to you. Secondly you will be exposed to new mechanisms and transformations which may have been eluded too previously or not at all. Finally you will be expected to apply this knowledge towards complex targets and problems. An important addendum is that this class is entirely based on a working knowledge of organic chemistry; I will review basic topics as they arise, however due to the nature of the course you are responsible for having/developing a basic understanding of: electronic structure, bonding, hybridization, resonance, aromaticity, acidity, stereochemistry, electrophilic/nucleophilic substitution, elimination, properties and names of typical functional groups and a basic concept of spectroscopy. students taking this course should have at minimum successfully completed Organic Chemistry I and II
