Chemistry 328 is the first part of a two-semester sequence for third?year chemistry majors. This class provides an understanding of atomic and molecular structure and energy. Course content builds upon basic ideas and concepts in chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Material covered involves the Schrödinger equation, particle in a box, postulates of quantum mechanics, the harmonic oscillator and rigid rotor, the hydrogen atom, approximation methods, and molecular spectroscopy. The class objective is to establish a solid foundation in quantum chemistry to be applied and understood in thermodynamics, kinetics, chemical bonding and molecular spectroscopy. Prerequisites: MATH 215 and PHYS 212. MATH 310 and/or 314 are recommended but not required.
