Chemistry and a Catholic Perspective on Sustainability

Catalog description

The purpose of this course is to make each student knowledgeable in basic chemical science which are central to life as we know it. Chemical principles will be introduced and developed within the framework of real-life applications, such as energy production, pollution abatement, and forestry will be presented through lectures and classroom discussions, video presentations and homework problems. In addition, the role of chemistry and technology in sustainable development will be explored from a Catholic worldview. This exploration will be guided by reading and discussing portions of Pope Francis?s writings, Laudato Si and Laudate Deum. In addition, selected essays from Aldo Leopold?s A Sand County Almanac and various essays by Wendel Berry will also be read and discussed.
