Bioinformatics in Biotechnology and Medicine

Catalog description

This course will introduce the latest developments in bioinformatics and explore its impact on biotechnology and medicine. The material covered will include approaches to analyzing sequences to understand variation in genes, genomes, and how they are regulated. The main focus will be on phenotypic effects and approaches for applying bioinformatics to understand genetic factors that contribute to diseases, disease progression, estimate disease risk, and development of drugs and interventions. We will examine these concepts from molecular, genomic, population, and evolutionary perspectives. Students will learn numerous bioinformatics programs. A strong emphasis will be placed on critical thinking, analytical skills, and applications beyond the classroom.
