Catalog description
The capstone is the culmination of the educational process in biomedical engineering. This course is the first part of a two-semester course that will develop students' ability to synthesize and apply engineering and scientific principles to the development of a solution that addresses a real-world problem. In this phase, student teams interact with healthcare professionals to discover unmet clinical needs with a focus based on their own interests. The team will develop an engineering solution in the form of a medical device to address an unmet healthcare need. Students perform deterministic and statistical studies of the problem and design the solution. Prototype construction will begin during this phase of the project. Additionally, the basics of the medical device design and development process including regulatory requirements are introduced in this course. Students will spend a minimum of 6 hours a week outside of class time working towards a prototype design.
