Catalog description

Significant advances have been made in the development of materials for use in medical related devices. This course provides students with information regarding-a) the chemical structure, morphological characteristics and process-ability of various types of biomaterials, e.g., polymerics, ceramics, metallic alloys, engineered tissues, b) key mechanisms (biological, physiological) associated with their interactions with tissues, blood and other body fluids, c) various means of modifying their surface chemistry/topographical nature to control their behavior within and outside the body, d) relevant biocompatibility and physical testing methods, and e) government certification requirements. Upon completion of course students will have a greater understanding of the knowledge of the nature and key properties of these materials, desired and potentially adverse clinical effects of biomaterial-blood/tissue interactions, and ultimately factors to consider when selecting a material for use in biomedical device-related applications.
