Black Geographies: Borders, Boundaries & Blackness in the U.S.

What are Black geographies, and how are they produced? What relationships exist between race and place-making (or placelessness)? How is race articulated through the production of space? How have Black geographies shifted across time and space, and what will they look like in the future? Focusing on the United States, students will have an opportunity to build their understanding of the historical and contemporary processes that reproduce US Black geographies, such as Black middle-class and affluent neighborhoods, predominantly Black rural prison towns, and concentrated urban poverty.
