Beyond Reason: Empathy and Identity

Catalog description

Leadership in the knowledge-based, global economy of the 21st century requires that students develop their abilities to constructively engage ethnic, religious, and political differences while generating and applying knowledge in the service of society. Developing critical reasoning is necessary but not sufficient; students must also cultivate a personal epistemology, empathy, and an integrated identity. This seminar uses a developmental science approach to synthesize understandings from the biological, social sciences, and humanities about these attributes. Discussions and Forum posts focus on selected readings and TED Talks. Students will write three 3-8 page synthesis/reflection papers and a 15-20 page research review paper. Grades are based on paper quality and class participation.
