Performance Practices in 17th & 18th Century Music

Catalog description

Bringing together historical and practical dimensions of music to provide holistic and dynamic engagement with the music of the past; exploring the musical culture of 17th and 18th centuries; reading about how music was conceived, heard, and felt; experiencing it in practice. Students will explore playing treatises, books on ornamentation and improvisation, idiosyncrasies of repertoires, and historical instruments; must be instrumentally proficient to perform musical examples in class. Taught by a music historian and a professional performer.
