Clinical Informatics Ethics and Equity Seminar

Catalog description

The purpose of this class is to introduce the students to the range of ethical issues they may confront in the management of health information technology. Through a series of case studies, the students will discuss ethical issues involved in the assembling of clinical data, obtaining informed consent, secondary use of the samples and data, unintended use of data, the ownership of data, considerations of privacy, de-identification and security, the increasing use of artificial intelligence, the impact of globalization, and the equity issues raised by the health system's increasing dependence on data access. There may be no clear answers to many of the questions raised, but the intention of the seminar is to increase the likelihood that the program's graduates will ask the questions. Credit. 1
