Lecture course follows the transformation of medieval politics, society and culture from the First Crusade to the Reformation. The evolution of secular monarchies and the flourishing of vernacular literature and devotion. The growth of commerce and an urban middle class. New forms of feminine religiosity and fascination with Christ's humanity. Intensified alienation and persecution of marginal groups such as the Jews. Field trip to the local museum.
