Introduction to the Medical ICU

Current second year students would be eligible to enroll in this critical care selective after completing their internal medicine clerkship. Students will round and care for critically ill patients in the Duke medical ICU as part of a multidisciplinary team. Exposure to critical care procedures including central line/arterial line placement, endotracheal intubation, chest tubes, thoracentesis/paracentesis, and bronchoscopy, as well as basic management of mechanical ventilation and other oxygen/respiratory devices and interpretation and application of relevant data are core to this experience. The course meets Monday - Friday, 6am - 6pm. Students should report on the first day to DMP 8W, near room 17 (resident work station) at 7am on the first day.
