Catalog description

This course is an introduction to both point-set and algebraic topology, which aim to classify the shapes of spaces up to continuous deformation. Topics include: Basic properties of topological spaces and continuous maps, compactness and connectedness, homotopy, fundamental group, classification of surfaces. Prerequisite: MATH 221. Recommended prerequisite: MATH 431 or 531 (which may be taken concurrently).
