Writing in and on Berlin: Perspectives on a Metropolis

This writing-intensive course uses Berlin as both subject and setting to explore the genre of travel writing. Through literary analysis, cultural studies, and writing workshops, students examine how Berlin is represented by visitors, migrants, and locals in historical and contemporary texts. Readings include memoirs, essays, fiction, poetry, and criticism. Site visits to cultural institutions and neighborhoods provide inspiration for writing. Assignments focus on narrative voice, description, and cultural critique, with opportunities to experiment across genres. Ideal for those interested in literary nonfiction, migration, and place-based writing. All work is in English; bilingual options available for German speakers.
