In contrast to the Chinese concept of the 'three traditions', Islamic tradition came to define the overlapping identity of Jewish, Christian and Islamic peoples by the concept of 'the people of the book'. This course offers an introduction to the three traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam by focusing on the concept of the sacred text as the written revelation of God. Comparisons between the Jewish torah, Christian gospels and Islamic law, and the practices of scribes, commentators, and textual scholars illuminate the similarities and also differences between the three great monotheistic traditions of the world. 001330
