Duke University · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
China's vast material power and professed developing country status place it in a unique and highly influential position with respect to the Global South. In this course, we will examine the political economy of contemporary China's relations with the Global South, covering topics including China's development and humanitarian assistance, trade and investment, Chinese soft power, and it's expanding security presence. We will explore how the politics of these topics shapes their economics and vice versa, and unpack the interests and roles of the many different state and non-state actors involved. 001653
