Catalog description

What distinguishes performance from behaviour? From Shamanic practices to national theatres; ritual and pageantry to the performance of everyday life, this course invites students to read gesture, habit and the movement of bodies in space as texts laden with meaning. Students examine different forms of performance in local, global and intercultural contexts to reassess the relationship between body, mind and society and to examine how embodied actions can create meaning, reinforce or challenge power structures and transmit cultural memory. 001803
