Methods of Historical Research

This course offers an introduction to theories, methods and approaches to historical inquiry and research including the use of archives, the interpretation of visual and textual documents, and the recording of oral histories. Students will be exposed to both the humanist and the social scientific approaches to historical research, as well as broader theoretical questions of history and historiography. As such, students learn what is history, how is it made, and what constitutes valid scholarly approaches to historiography. Students will apply their learning by conducting original historical research on a topic of their own choosing and writing a research paper. 001077
