This interdisciplinary course explores the live music scenes of cities in China today and the history of those scenes over the past century. Focusing on the urban space of the live house featuring jazz, blues, rock, hip hop, electronica, and DJs, we will delve into these scenes and styles of music. Major topics touched upon in this course include globalization, localization, creative cultures and industries, and musical communities and scenes. Cities covered in this course will include Beijing, Shanghai, Kunshan, and Suzhou. Writing assignments will focus on analyzing particular scenes based on research and observations. 001539
