Texts in Motion
Duke University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
What does it mean for a text to 'go global'? How would audiences read it differently across the contexts in which it is marketed? How do various technologies create possibilities and constraints in the publishing industry? This course examines cultural production and circulation through the lenses of material and literary history, economics and industry, and creative practice. Possible topics include print technologies (the typewriter and Xerox machine), popular and countercultural publications (manga and zines), and literary case studies (a text read in various geographic and temporal contexts). Students also produce, 'market,' and circulate their own texts, creatively and critically reflecting on the roles of author and publisher as forms of rooted globalism. 002172
