Global Histories of the Anthropocene

Over the last several decades, more and more people have used the term 'Anthropocene' to describe our current global environmental condition. But what is the Anthropocene? When did it begin and how? And is the Anthropocene a useful framework for understanding environmental history and environmental politics? This course will examine a range of scholarly interpretations about the Anthropocene, including those which have critiqued the very concept of the Anthropocene. We will consider how histories of the Anthropocene intersect with histories of capitalism and imperialism. Drawing from various disciplines and genres, we will also discuss and analyze cultural depictions of the Anthropocene from across the world. 002170
