Selected readings in ancient, medieval, early modern, and modern texts, prose and poetry. Examples: Heike monogatari , Makura no sôshi, Oku no hosomichi, Hyakunin isshu, Tsurezuregusa, and Gakumon no susume. Emphasis on nuanced, in depth understandings of classical grammar. Translation of major texts in the classical tradition. Prerequisite: Japanese 408S or permission of instructor.
