Race & Conservatism in the Twentieth Century U.S.

Catalog description

This course looks at the history of race and modern conservatism in the United States. Students will learn about the history of conservative leaders, politicians, and grassroots activists starting in the civil rights era and ending with the January 6th insurrection. This class focuses on how the Republican Party, and conservatives more broadly, have dealt with questions of race in this period. Students will look at a multiracial conservative history that includes the voices of non-white members of the GOP and conservative movements. Students will spend a significant amount of time in the course researching and writing original historical papers connected to the themes of the course.
