Practicing Constructive Dialogue

Catalog description

The Kern National Network and the Josiah Macy Foundation have selected Duke School of Medicine as one of nine medical schools to participate as a demonstration site for the Constructive Dialogue Institute's 'Perspectives in Academic Medicine' curriculum. The goal of the curriculum is to facilitate the identification of effective methods and resources for bridging across differences and overcoming polarization in academic medicine, including courage, humility, openness, fair-mindedness, patience, and respect. This is a SELECTIVE opportunity offered simultaneously as an ELECTIVE opportunity for the Duke School of Medicine – MD students (MS4) Capstone Course. For MBS students, there are three components to the activity. All three must be completed in order to earn credit. Partial credit will not be awarded. 1)Completion of all 6 online modules before the first discussion session; 2) Attendance at all 3 Zoom-based discussion sessions. The sessions will take place during three consecutive weeks on the same weeknight from 5:30-6:30 p.m, and 3) Completion of three reflection papers (250-500 words) in response to prompts provided following each of the Zoom-based discussion sessions.
