Reimagining Aging

Catalog description

This course offers a comprehensive review of models of aging in America with clinical and administrative interprofessional experiences in Durham, NC. Students will have patient-facing and team-based encounters that explore contemporary models of care for older adults. This will include a half-day clinical experience in a continuing care retirement community, participation in a quality improvement project at an assisted living or nursing home, and TeleHOPE conferences that explore optimal transitions from the hospital to skilled nursing centers. Learners will gain skills in conducting patient interviews and exams, and in critically reviewing medical literature. They will have opportunities to learn from many different professionals involved in the care of older adults. At the conclusion of the course, learners will propose an innovative, comprehensive long-term care model that promotes optimal aging. Course Directors: Dr. Neema Sharda and Dr. Gwendolen Buhr.
