Community Health Engagement Practicum

Catalog description

This course provides students with a foundation in the principles and practices of population health improvement within the framework of community engagement. Participants are expected to complete required readings and instructional modules that provide core knowledge regarding population health and community engagement and participate in site tours and conversations with community health leaders. After appropriate orientation and onboarding with a community health partner of Duke's Division of Community Health, students will then gain further insight and skills during immersive weekly work collaboration with an organization conducting a community health improvement initiative. Students will be given an opportunity, in advance, to share their community health interests and preferences for project placement. The practicum culminates with the completion of a work plan that demonstrates students' acquisition of specific skills necessary to plan, implement, and/or assess a population health improvement initiative that is community-engaged patient/client-centered. The requirements for this product are derived from each student's individual learning plan in consultation with the host community organization and the Community Health Division.
