Europe in the Long Nineteenth Century, 1789-1914

Catalog description

A study of European history between the French Revolution and the First World War. Major themes include the abolition of slavery, the rise of capitalism and socialism, and the expansion of European empire. Students will also be exposed to some of the period's greatest thinkers, likely including Olympia de Gouges, Mary Shelley, Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, and Leo Tolstoy. Course is preparation for, but not pre-requisite for, History 286: Europe in the Twentieth Century.
