Anthropology of Disability

This course establishes ways to think about disability beyond medical definitions. It introduces the field of disability studies through a survey of canonical texts and core concepts of disability justice and critical studies of care. A foundation of disability studies and the course's guiding premise is that disability is not something inherently 'wrong' with individuals, but rather is shaped by society. Through ethnographies as well as films and memoirs, we will examine disability across global cultural and historical locations, and will address the traffic between disability and society across differences such as race, gender, and sexuality.
