Imperialism and Islamism

This course draws on transnational material to gain perspectives on the conflict between the US and its Islamist opponents. Its central concern is Islam's transnational past and relations of European empires to that past. It is guided by a transnational perspective framing specific case studies, original source material and arguments on the nature of global Islamist politics and on the US as an imperial power. Students will strengthen skills in global anthropological and historical analysis, using the conflict between the US and its Islamist opponents as a case study.
