Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

Catalog description

This elective is an intensive clinical experience in health promotion and disease prevention. Students see patients in the Duke Family Medicine Center, Duke Affiliated Programs, and Duke Community Health Programs. They will participate in a variety of activities designed to help them provide excellent health maintenance care. Specific content areas addressed include risk assessment, counseling skills in nutrition, safe sex practices, and smoking and alcohol cessation, as well as screening tests and immunizations. Students will be introduced to the practical implementation of preventative care in the clinical and community setting. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Family Medicine Clerkship (COMMFAM 205C). All interested students should contact the Coordinator of Medical Student Programs, Gretchen Oakley, at 919-681-3066.
