Catalog description

This enrollment status is intended for third-year medical students (MS3) who wish to pursue additional research time during the third year. Students engaging in additional research must enroll in ASR 301B for a duration of one, two, or three months, as appropriate. A final research grade will not be submitted until the student has completed their full period of Advanced Scholarly Research. Students enrolled in Advanced Scholarly Research (ASR) are not eligible to participate in any fourth-year (MS4) clinical rotations until their Scholarly Work Project (SWP) has been submitted. There is no grade assigned for ASR enrollment itself. The student's final research grade is recorded as part of the spring research course, and the thesis grade is entered upon successful submission of the Scholarly Work Project. At that time, a grade is recorded for Thesis 301B. Students receiving scholarships that require 12 months of research must register for the Advanced Scholarly Research course during the summer terms in which they are conducting additional research (Sections 42, 43, and 44). Section 41 is not available for ASR enrollment, as it is reserved for Thesis 301B. Students who need to continue research beyond Summer Section 44 must be placed on Continuation of Research (CRS) status for the fall term. Students requiring only a few additional weeks of research must still register for one full month of Advanced Scholarly Research. ASR enrollment is recorded as No Credit / No Grade.
