The second objective is to evaluate the significance of historical context. The third objective is to assess the meaning of change over time. Obviously an evangelical in the year 1730 was different from an evangelical today. And finally, beside those substantive objectives stands a methodological one. How do we deal with a living religious tradition in a manner that is critical yet empathetically sensitive to the humanity of its adherents?
