This course considers the role elections play in U.S. politics using historical and modern-day examples of campaigns and elections. Elections allow people an opportunity to participate in their government. But exactly what does this exercise in political choice entail? When and how do campaigns matter? Do campaigns persuade voters? How do voters interact with and influence campaigns and elections? How do campaigns determine strategy? These questions among others will be explored in order to study the dynamics of presidential and congressional campaigns, the process of running for office, and the role of the media, interest groups, and political parties in elections. In addition, social science research is used to explore the connection between elections and governing, the public’s role, and the implications for democracy.
