Catalog description

What does it mean to be a U.S. citizen? Who should and should not be allowed to become one? Why? Alongside divergent philosophical approaches to human rights, human nature, and ethics in general, the course will analyze the ethical and broader philosophical background of the origins and subsequent development of the rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizens, both in theory and in practice. Simultaneously, the course will consider ethical responses to immigration, asylum, and human trafficking, especially framed in terms of human rights and the legacies of historical inequities, such as slavery. This course only satisfies the CORE requirement when offered as a service learning course.
