This seminar examines ideas and practices regarding the divine, the demonic, and the supernatural in early modern Europe, focusing on understanding early modern conceptions and treatments of people (largely but not only women) believed to be saints and/or witches. Readings and assignments explore how these beliefs and practices were tied to religious, social, political, legal, and economic developments, and how they changed (and did not change) over the early modern period.
