God and Evolution

Catalog description

Darwin’s theory of evolution did not merely revolutionize the science of biology. It radically revised our understanding of the natural order and humanity’s place in it, challenged our understanding of morality and human nature, and - at least according to some - fundamentally undermined traditional understandings of God and the relationship of the divine to humanity and the world. This course will consider the implications of evolution for religion and related issues, asking how we should view God, human beings, and the natural world in the wake of the tectonic shift that Darwin’s theory precipitated. Course assignments will consist of essays written in response to sophisticated texts that engage with the broad ramifications of Darwin’s theory. Satisfies the Literary Studies, Creative Writing, and Rhetoric requirement. Prerequisites & Notes This class does not satisfy the WRI-101 requirement.
