Catalog description

This class surveys theatre created at different historical moments prior to the 20th century. The course examines the various components of theatrical events, from actors and designers to architecture and audience, looking at the ways in which both the creative components of theatrical events and their social and cultural function have changed over time. The course also explores the work of theatre historians in excavating and analyzing the “remains” of theatrical performances. The course combines different modes of investigation and research to illuminate theatrical practices from around the world. Satisfies the Visual and Performing Arts requirement.
