Medicine and Gender in 20th Century Spain

Catalog description

In this course, we will analyze the medical discourse in fiction and non-fiction texts insomuch as it creates the framework for constructing and justifying definitions of gender and sexuality. We will focus on the first half of the 20 th century, particularly the Second Republic (1931-1936), the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and the Franco Dictatorship (1939-1975). We will consider both liberal and conservative viewpoints as well as contemporary perspectives. Satisfies Post-1800 requirement for the major in Hispanic Studies. Satisfies a minor requirement in Hispanic Studies. Satisfies Justice, Equality, and Community. Prerequisites & Notes Completion of a 300-level course in Spanish, or permission of the instructor. Limited to juniors and seniors. Priority will be given to majors, then minors.
