Catalog description

This course explores the cultural and intellectual contribution of the African descent population in Spain and the Americas, with a focus on the Caribbean context and the U.S. Latino production. This course features writers, activists, and artists such as Nicolás Guillén, Yolanda Arroyo, Elizabeth Acevedo, and Desirée Bela-Lobedde, among others. We will link conversations about race, racism, colonialism, and immigration with contemporary discussions about the African legacy in Spain. Our course will combine the analysis of different cultural texts from literature, music, and film to art, with trips to Spanish southern cities, like Sevilla and Córdoba, known for their North African influence.. Satisfies major and minor requirement in Hispanic Studies. Satisfies Literary Studies, Creative Writing, and Rhetoric requirement. Prerequisites & Notes SPA 260 or its equivalent.
