The Cultural Politics of Flamenco

Sánchez y Sánchez Interdisciplinary course that examines the art of flamenco as a site of personal struggle, individual introspection, and communal resistance of the Roma people (formerly referred to as Gypsies) and Southern Spaniards who have been pushed to the margins of society as peripheral citizens and yet are placed at the center of artistic life and cultural identity in Spain. By the end of the semester students will have an appreciation of the Roma culture and of Southern Spain which will allow them to interrogate social injustice, exclusion, and resilience through the lens of flamenco lyrics, music, and dance. Additionally, we will adopt a comparative approach in order to uncover connections and patterns between social injustice and the role of art in the South of Spain and the South of the United States. Interdisciplinary theoretical approaches. Conducted in Spanish. Satisfies Post-1800 requirement for the major in Hispanic Studies. Satisfies Major and Minor requirements in Hispanic Studies. Satisfies Literary Studies, Creative Writing and Rhetoric requirement. Satisfies the Justice, Equality, and Community requirement. Satisfies Foreign Language requirement.
